Jenny’s Two Pennies: The Bookshop At Water’s End by Patti Callahan Henry

The Bookshop At Water's End Patti Callahan Henry

My latest book for review has been a pleasure to read. When reading The Bookshop At Water’s End, you can almost smell the ocean, see the Spanish moss in the live oaks swaying in the breeze and feel the warm sunshine on your shoulders.

The author writes with such poetic prose that you find yourself pausing after reading one of her descriptive passages, wanting to remember the words.

This is a book about enduring friendships-the kind that lasts forever; the kind that holds secrets and even holds grudges. It’s about love and profound loss and finding answers to questions that you may not really want to know. It’s also about redemption and forgiveness.

With endearing characters set in a small shore town, this one just may be the author’s best book yet, and that’s saying a lot.

Patti Callahan Henry does southern fiction divine justice.

Jenny’s Two Pennies: The Life She Was Given by Ellen Marie Wiseman

The Life She Was Given-Ellen Marie Wiseman

This is the latest book by popular author Ellen Marie Wiseman.  It is a historical fiction not to be missed.  The author has outdone herself with this one.

This book takes you to the circus where lions, tigers, and elephants steal the show.  Lilly is ten years old, shunned by her family, she becomes part of the circus’ freak show.  Feeling unloved she longs for just one friend.

There are deeply rooted family secrets that drastically change her life.   What follows is a riveting story of deception and survival against all odds.  It will keep you turning the pages late into the night with your heart in your throat.  It is a story you won’t soon forget.  You just might become another fan of her books.

Other books by the author include:  The Plum Tree, What She Left Behind, and Coal River.  I personally recommend any of her books

Jenny’s Two Pennies: Beach House for Rent by Mary Alice Monroe

Jenny's Two Pennies Beach House for Rent by Mary Alice Monroe

I have been a long time fan of Mary Alice Monroe’s books. From Beach House to Skyward to Time Is A River, and then her Lowcountry Summer Series, I have savored her love of the Lowcountry of South Carolina. I have learned about sea turtles and their habits, their amazing journeys to and from the ocean. I have witnessed through her words the survival of seabirds and their habitats, how we all play a part in the conservation of the flora and fauna native to the area and the importance of doing no harm.

Sprinkle in the sand dunes, sea oats, wildflowers and the perfect beach cottage and you have the makings of the perfect beach story- Beach House For Rent. This is the same beach cottage that belonged to Lovie, the matriarch of the family. Daughter Cara rents the cottage to a young woman looking for direction and solitude while she begins to paint seabirds, commissioned to be images on postage stamps. Cara and her husband run an eco-tourism boat business. Tragedy strikes Cara’s ideal life and the two women are destined to become supporters of each other in surprising ways.

Will both women learn how to cope, how to share compassion and empathy, how to move forward and reach their destiny?

In true form, the author gifts us with the beauty of the location and with endearing characters, she once again mesmerizes us with her words, telling us of the magic of the sea and all it offers, if only we listen. Don’t miss this one. This is my honest and unsolicited review.

About Beach House for Rent:

Two women. One summer. One very special house.

Two women from different generations are bound together by a beloved beach house. Cara Rutledge, 50, rents her quaint beach house on Isle of Palms to Heather Wyatt, 26, for the summer. Heather’s anxiety keeps her indoors with her caged canaries until the shorebirds–and a man who rescues them–lure her out to the beach. As the summer progresses and Heather’s heart opens to the rhythms of the island, Cara’s life reels with sudden tragedy. When their worlds shift like the sand under their feet these two very different women come together to discover their common bonds and unique strengths. So at summer’s end they, like the migrating shorebirds that come to the island every summer, too, can take flight.

REMINDER: Lisa Wingate Signing Friday, June 9th

Pelican Bookstore Signing Lisa Wingate

Lisa Wingate will be joining us Friday, June 9th from 5 pm to 7 pm at Silver Coast Winery, and she will read and sign copies of her newest book Before We Were Yours.

Admission is $7.50 and includes a glass of wine. Silver Coast Winery is located at 6680 Barbeque Rd NW, Ocean Isle Beach, NC 28469. (Map below)

About Before We Were Yours:

This masterful, harrowing and ultimately redemptive novel uncovers and brilliantly fictionalizes a devastating slice of little-known American history… and tells a story of a family torn apart by a shocking betrayal.

Memphis, Tennessee, 1936. Docked aboard the family’s shantyboat, the Arcadia, the five Foss children find their lives changed forever when their parents leave them alone one stormy night. Rill Foss, just twelve years old, must shepherd her four younger siblings as they are wrenched from their boat on the Mississippi and thrown into the care of The Tennessee Children’s Home Society, a notorious system of orphanages ultimately deemed responsible for the kidnapping and selling thousands of children in illegal adoptions.

South Carolina, Present Day. Born into a world of wealth and privilege, Avery Stafford seems to have it all. A loving daughter to her father, a U.S. Senator, with her own ambitious career as an assistant D.A. and a handsome fiancé waiting for her in Baltimore, she has lived an admittedly charmed life. But when Avery returns to Aiken to help her father weather a health crisis and a political attack, a chance encounter with May Crandall, an elderly woman she’s never met before, leaves Avery deeply shaken. Avery’s decision to learn more about May’s life will take her on a journey through her family’s long-hidden history, illuminating what’s at the very center of Avery’s story and buried deep within her own heart.

Based on first hand accounts of the true stories behind the Tennessee Children’s Home Society and the infamously cruel Georgia Tann, who ran the orphanage largely unchecked thanks to friends with deep pockets and far-reaching political power, Wingate has created an incredibly riveting, heart-wrenching read.
